Next Level : Efterklang

26 Jan

Wait a second. You’re booking your flight to SXSW right now? That’s awesome. Believe us, you’re going to rock your face off. But if there’s one thing you shouldn’t forget before you go (aside from a ‘flaunt-it’ pose when you get the full-body scan), it’s that you knew about the festival’s soon-to-be breakout band, Efterklang, before everyone else did.

Efterklang is Casper Clausen (vocals), Mads Brauer (electronics), Thomas Husmer (drums, trumpet, percussion), and Rasmus Stolberg (bass). Now based in Copenhagen, Denmark, three out of the four-piece actually grew up on a small Danish island, which probably sounds a lot cooler than it actually is. They’ve just signed to label 4AD to release their third-full length album, “Magic Chairs” on February 23.

Not only is the album partly inspired by the band’s travels to Oregon and Tel Aviv, but it’s also produced by Gareth Jones (Depeche Mode, Nick Cave); and if their five-minute single “Modern Drift” is any inclination of what the nine other tracks sound like, Jones still has his swagger. Basically, Efterklang is the direction orchestral pop is moving in 2010.

And they would know the direction of music. Even if it’s taken 10 years for them to get the recognition they deserve, the record label they run, Rumraket Records, is responsible for releasing Grizzly Bear’s 2005 debut, “Horn of Plenty.” Yes, that Grizzly Bear.

Efterklang will be playing with Balmorhea at the El Mocambo in Toronto on March 6th.  The band usually has an additional four members when they tour, so expect a crazy-full sound when you get there. And don’t forget to tell everyone at South-By whose minds are being blown by some sweet, sweet Danish pop that you know all about Efterklang, and that you’ve already seen them. Care of your friends at Dirtbag, of course.

  1. Efterklang Joins Forces With French Filmmaker For “An Island” « Dirtbag Journalism - November 11, 2010

[…] Efterklang dropped their new album Magic Chain earlier this year. After that the band played SWSW and toured all over the world. Sounds like a good year right ? Well it seems the boys have big things planned for 2011 as well. The band has recently finished a film with French filmmaker Vincent Moon titled An Island. From what we know, it was filmed in the Danish country side and the idea was to make a film as short as the record. The end result was pretty awesome. Efterklang collaborated with over 200 local musicians; all creating their own performances and interpretations of songs from Magic Chains. […]
