Next Level : Little Dragon

1 Mar

Sweden has been all the rage in music for a long time. Before Lykke Li’s fierce dance moves and El Perro del Mars soothing melancholic love songs; this Gothenburg four piece has been making a name for themselves and really setting the bar higher for Sweden’s innovative music scene . Swedish japanese singer Yukimi Nagano(vocals/percussion) started Little Dragon back in 2006. The band consist of her high school classmates: Erik Bodin (drums), Fredrik Källgren Wallin (bass), and Håkan Wirenstrand (keyboards). Their first release was a double A-side 7” single titled Test/Twice. For their debut album, they signed with British indie label Peacefrog. The album had a fresh and very original take on 90’s trip-hop, which garnered them a lot of attention very early on. The single Twice/Test would later appear on a Season 5 episode of Grey’s Anatomy. The band’s sophomore album, Machine Dreams stayed true to their signature sound, with a few songs that dwelled into a more poppy side of things. Singles like Feather and Swimming have solidified the band’s genius; not to mention a slew of amazing remixes, something Little Dragon has also become known for . The bands other musical endeavours aside from Little Dragon are pretty damn good as well. Erik and Yukimi worked with fellow Swede(and Yukimi’s current beau) Jose Gonzales on his second album, In Our Nature. Yukimi has done vocals for Swedish electronic jazz duo, Koops and has also collaborated with Swell Season. Their most high-profile collaboration to date will be heard on March 9th when the Gorillaz release their highly anticipated third album, Plastic Beach. The band did the songs Empire Ants and To Binge, both of which are on the new Gorillaz album. Little Dragon will be playing with Neon Indian at a CMW Showcase at Lees Palace in Toronto on March 11th. We suggest you get your sweet buns there nice and early!
