M.I.A’s New Single, XXXO

10 May

M.I.A stirred up a hearty brew of controversy a weeks ago when she released the video for “Born Free”. The video was so graphic that You Tube had it banned(Vevo has just recently put it back up with a parental advisory message) and a lot of people thought the drum heavy post-punk banger was her first single. Sorry guys, Maya decided to give us something a little different. A british radio station played her new single, XXXO and the small snippet of that has leaked onto You Tube. According to what we reported on May 4th, the word on the street is M.I.A has recruited Hype Williams as the director for the video. Based on Hype’s last few videos(ie. Nicki Minaj’s Massive Attack and Christina’s Not Myself Tonight); do you think he’ll deliver the Sri Lankan bombshell a video that the kids will be talking about at the watering hole the next day, or just another average, over conceptualized video ? We’ll see

Next Level : James Blake

10 May

If the collage is the 20th century art-form, then London-based James Blake’s post-dubstep productions inform the 21st century of the next great art-form: the audio decoupage.

Blake—that’s his middle name (James is his first)—samples, mixes, adds his vocals and instrumentation, and then varnishes them all together; resulting in big picture poetry. With such poised dashes of funk and silence, sometimes it’s hard to decide whether to dance or to sob. Not surprisingly, his seamless songs have turned all three members of The xx into huge fans, with coy crooner Oliver Sim gushing to NME this month, “[Blake] has an amazing voice.”

And this 21-year-old contemporary music student is not letting that voice go to waste. In less than a year, he’s released the single, Air & Lack Thereof on Hemlock Recordings and The Bell Sketch EP on Hessel Audio; and his R&B-influenced CMYK EP (featuring samples of Brandy, R. Kelly, & Kelis) will be out May 31st digitally and on 12’’ vinyl from R&S Records.

Aside from cutting his teeth at the same college all four members of Blur attended, he’s remixed Lil Wayne’s “A Milli” and “Bills Bills Bills” by Destiny’s Child under the moniker Harmonix; as well as shuffled himself into Brit band Mount Kimbie’s live lineup after inviting them via MySpace message to one of his DJ sets.

In September, the masterful editor of the aural told The Quietus, “I just think you don’t appreciate the beauty of some sounds until you forget their context for a few seconds.” Unfortunately, it does not look like we at Dirtbag can appreciate his beautiful sounds in the North American context, as his only listed tour dates are in Europe. Here’s hoping that we can nudge him into releasing that full-length that nudges him across the pond.

10 May

Lately(via Pitchfork)

Canada’s contribution to “Chill Wave”, Guelph band Memoryhouse bring us their newest video Lately. In this three minute clip, two girls share everything from late night games of Patty Cake, red dresses and boys. This band has been climbing up the ranks lately, which is one of the reason’s we coined them as “Next Level” back in March because we definitely saw the potential. Thanks for proving us right guys, your amazing!!

Uffie’s Sex Dreams Will Come To Light On June 8th

10 May

Electro-rap diva Uffie has been talking about releasing a record since 2006. After numerous underground club bangers and a lot of hype; we think it’s about time she releases something, don’t you ? Other artist notorious for pushbacks (ie. Kid Sister)  have received very mixed/harsh reviews from the critics solely based on the fact that if your gonna push back your record; you have to make sure that shit is fire when it finally comes out. Regardless of how irritated we’ve become of this jive talking hussy; it’s safe to say that this time Uffie may actually deliver a finished product. The newest (and surely final) pushback of her long awaited debut album, Sex Dreams And Denim Jeans, brings us to the lovely date of June 8th, 2010. The album will be released via Ed Banger(In Europe)/Elecktra Records(In the U.S/Canada) and features appearences by Matt Safer of The Rapture and Pharrel Williams; who’s featured on her new single, ADD SUV. The video has been shot and will be released very soon. The tracklist for Sex Dreams And Denim Jeans is listed below(producers listed as well in brackets) :

  1. “Pop the Glock” (Feadz)
  2. “Art of Uff” (Mr. Oizo)
  3. ADD SUV” (Feat. Pharrell Williams) (Mirwais)
  4. “Give It Away” (Feadz & J-Mat)
  5. “MC’s Can Kiss” (Mr. Oizo)
  6. “Difficult” (SebastiAn)
  7. “First Love” (Mr. Oizo)
  8. “Sex Dreams & Denim Jeans” (Mirwais)
  9. “Our Song” (Feadz & Mr Oizo)
  10. “Illusion Of Love” (Feat. Mattie Safer) (Mirwais & Uffie)
  11. “Neuneu” (Mr. Oizo)
  12. “Brand New Car” (Feadz)
  13. “Hong Kong Garden” (Mirwais)
  14. “Ricky” (Feadz)

C’mon Uffie, prove us wrong. ADD SUV sounds pretty hot, let’s see how the video looks. Also, she’s covering Siouxsie And The Banshies hit single, Hong Kong Garden ?! My dear, you better represent.

New Toro Y Moi 7”/Tour With Phoenix This Summer

10 May

Dirtbag Journalism has only been going for about six months now. One of the biggest things we had the privelege to announce was the rise of an artist who at the time was just “Next Level”. Since the release of his debut album Causers Of This, South Carolina native Toro Y Moi has surpassed any and all expectations set by music critics(including Dirtbag) and surely by himself. We are proud to announce after receiving a tip from our friends at Force Field PR, Toro will be giving us more to look forward too in 2010. What you see above is the cover art for Toro Y Moi’s next single, Leave Everywhere, which will be released as a 7” and digitally on July 20th, 2010. According to what we know, this 7” will provide us with an idea of what to expect from Toro later this year when he releases the follow-up to Causers Of This. Anyone who’s gotten use to his signature “glo-fi” sound will be surprised, but until July 20th we won’t know anything for sure. We’ll keep you posted of any new information on this upcoming release. In other news, Toro Y Moi will be joining Grammy winning indie rockers Phoenix on tour starting in August. Could you imagine how amazing that show would be ? Hoepfully they’ll hit your city and won’t need too. Toro recently did Yours Truly; this live remake of You Hid is amazing. Check it out!
