The Man Behind “All Tomorrow’s Parties” Directs Short Film Starring Chloe Sevigny

22 Sep

Our friends at Tell All Your Friends PR have given us the scoop on a brand new film that will be premiering at the New York Film festival. Director Johnathan Caouette will debut his new film, All Flowers In Time on September 30th. The film, which stars actress/former model Chloe Sevigny sounds pretty weird and not a lot of information has been released.

Here’s a small plot synopsis released to the media:

A malevolent signal emitted by a Dutch television program bewitches viewers and possesses young girls and boys making them believe that they can morph into other people and monsters.

Sounds good right ?

Johnathan collaborated with Montreal art collective, The Phi Group and while details on the movie are vague; the trailer leaves you wondering what the hell is going to happen. Johnathan is known for his work on the documentary, All Tomorrow’s Parties and Tarnation.

Watch the trailer here and let us know what you think.

Dirtbag Awards : Melissa Kim’s Top 10 New Bands/Artist of 2010 Pt. 1

20 Sep

10. Two Door Cinema Club(
http://www.myspace.com/twodoorcinemaclub)
This Northern Irish band produces pop that will pique the interest of any indie cynic.

9. Drake(http://www.myspace.com/thisisdrake)

His rap style is like no other I’ve ever heard. But I’m mostly just pleased with how Mr. Jimmy Brooks himself continues to rep Toronto in such a positive and sincere way.

8. The Pop Winds(http://www.myspace.com/thepopwinds)
You already know why I love these boys.

7. The Bitters(
http://www.myspace.com/bittersband)
The grotesque album art. Guitarist Ben Cook’s drum battle with Nick Jonas in
Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam
. Those facts have nothing to do with their music, but
that’s because this Toronto band already has that all down; shaking things up
however they can. And I love that.

6. Mount Kimbie(http://www.myspace.com/mountkimbie)
Not only does this band bro down with James Blake on a pretty regular basis, but they are also kind of the forefathers of the post-dubstep movement. I didn’t really discover what dubstep was all about until this year, but I’m so happy I did.

5. James Blake(http://www.myspace.com/jamesblakeproduction)
All gushing and background info for this man has been reserved to my Next Level
piece on him unless you want a marriage proposal to ensue.

Sweden’s given us quite a bit to talk about over the years, but remember when this 24-year-old firecracker opened for El Perro Del Mar and built a fan base all her own in the span of 6 months ? Well that’s the story behind the immediate success of Lykke Li after she dropped her debut LP, Youth Novels in 2008. It’s been almost two years since that record came out and it looks like were not even going to have to ask what’s next because Lykke Li plans to give us a little taste very soon.

Next Level : Cosmetics

8 Sep

Captured Tracks has made 2010 pretty fucking amazing. It doesn’t take much to prove that point when every one of their artist have each shown a unique sense of musical direction, not to mention insane amounts of potential early on. This time around, the object of our musical affection comes in the form of Vancouver duo that’s music is sexy, dreamy, and nothing short of perfection.

Cosmetics consist of Nic and Aja, a young couple that both work in a fashion warehouse as their day jobs. Nic buys jewelry from wholesalers and Aja does Graphic Design. With the exception of their separate working courtiers, they’re pretty much always together.

Nic talks about their working relationship in a Vice Interview stating that :

” I always knew that if I was ever in a band, I wanted it to be a creative partnership like The Cramps. I would read about Lux Interior and Poison Ivy and be like, ‘That’s what I want.’ A really close partnership, not just going to band practice once a week, but working towards something every day, doing every aspect of it. So it’s an extension of our normal lives”.

Sounds like the recipe to success Nic. Enter Captured Tracks Records (aka 2010’s most consistent record label) and boom, here we are.

The band got picked up by the Brooklyn label in January, which immediately lead to the release of the Soft Skin/Black Leather Gloves 7”. Their sexy single Black Leather Gloves caught the attention of London producer Premier Rang, which lead to Cosmetics and Rang working on a remake of the track( They did the entire track with him via email, pretty awesome right ?) . Dancefloor ready, while retaining its spooking sound; the remake garnered the band some attention from our friends at Pitchfork, not to mention tons of other music critics and new fans.

After a spring tour with label mates Blank Dogs and their first taste of remix action for the Death On Plains single; Cosmetics released their second 7”, Sleepwalking/The Cries in July 2010. The single Sleepwalking has been causing quite a stir. From its rough, upbeat, disco vibe, to Ajas vocals channeling Coldwave queen, Virna Lindth; the song has definitely left music critics wondering what type of fire they’ll bring on their debut LP.

The band are featured in the current issue of Dazed and Confused(They also did an exclusive mixtape for Dazed Digital, which can be found here).

Cosmetics are currently touring, with more dates to be announced. Apparently their shows lead to fist fights and synths being pulled out being sets. Can’t wait!

Dirtbag Debut : Mice Parade – In Between Times

7 Sep

What It Means To Be Left Handed drops next week via Fat Cat Records. Just to show exactly how beautiful the first single, In Between Times truely is ; director Meredith Godreau brings us a video that lives up to Mice Parade’s overall mystique.

Tea and honey seems to become a full on acid trip in the span of 4 minutes. You never really get it but like anything Mice Parade does, that’s kind of the point. Beautiful and dramatic, yet mind boggling and mysterious. The rest of this record should be just as crazy. Let’s wait and see.

Mice Parade will be playing El Mocambo on September 29th
