New Cold War Kids, Mine Is Yours

13 Oct

So the wait is finally over for a new Cold War Kids record. NME reports that the band plans to drop their follow-up to 2008’s Loyalty To Loyalty next year.

Mine Is Yours is their third album and it’ll be released on January 24th, 2011. The record was produced by Jacquire King. This legend has worked with the likes of Tom Waits, Kings Of Leon, and Modest Mouse. Frontman Nathan Willet talks about the new record in a press release(we got the scoop on that via Spinner)

“I got home from tour and realized I was married. All my friends had either jumped in the deep end of a relationship or had drowned. When did things get so serious? We fought growing up but the wild nights and free-for-all caught up to us. Some people got out in time and others had permanent damage. For this record, I wrote about the joys and failures of commitment all around me.”

Cold War Kids will begin touring on November 5th in California. More U.S dates can be found on their myspace and U.K dates will be announced soon.

Dirtbag Debut : Blue Water White Death – Grunt Tube

13 Oct

Jamie Stewart(Xiu Xiu) and Johnathan Meiburg(Shearwater) new band, Blue Water White Death’s debut album drops today via Graveface. For their new video, Grunt Tube; Jamie Stewart has taken a bunch of clips from a few different adventures and formed them into one crazy video. Here’s Jamie’s summary of the clips on here :

  • Looking out of the window of a car while on a one-month drive through the most beautiful and bleak parts of the U.S.A. and Canada while infected with swine flu.
  • Close up shots of computer screens while watching art movies, porn, and cheap serial television in extreme states of drunkenness and jet lag.
  • Shots of over-growth while being lost in Appalachia.
  • Taping quotes from books about the CIA’s involvement in Afghanistan, gay life in Japan, and early, early 4AD records.
  • Ultra close-ups of those little toys on a string that you get from 50-cent vending machines that you attach to your Game Boy or cell phone.

Thanks Jamie!

Next Level : Professor Green

12 Oct

Twenty-six-year-old English grime rapper Professor Green, real name Stephen Paul Manderson, isn’t exactly “next level” in the sense that he’s an up-and-coming artist. Well, at least not in Europe. All three of his past singles have been raging the European charts since his debut album—which went gold in the U.K.—Alive Till I’m Dead, dropped in July on Virgin Records. What makes him “next level” here and now is his significant potential at a successful North American crossover. Said potential was confirmed when he further pushed grime rap into the European mainstream by infusing clever lyrics, pop, and a rather famous friend into his album.

Professor Green may be a high school dropout, but he has been schooling MCs in over 100 rap battles, including one in 2008 where he won £50,000. But life has not always been so easy for him. He was raised by his grandmother in the Northwold estate in Clapton, Hackney in East London in a strip, according to The Guardian, known as the Murder Mile. Also, not long after being signed to The Streets’ label, The Beats, the label went under in 2008. Then last year, two weeks after he had his neck adorned with a tattoo of the word “Lucky,” he was stabbed with a broken bottle in a bar fight where the tattoo lay. Not only that, but he is constantly pining over Jessica Alba… and she is married with child!

He may not be a professor either, but he sure seems to know how to get his social networking on as if he had accreditation in it. As a Facebook friend of Lily Allen, he casually mentioned he got the rights to the lyrics from the S.O.S. Band’s “Just Be Good to Me,” and she opted to briefly step out of retirement to sing the chorus of his “Just be Good to Green.” A tour opening for Allen subsequently followed. He is also an avid Twitter user, and in July he announced that his second full-length, Good Times, will be out next year.

His other two singles, “I Need You Tonight” featuring Ed Drewett, and “Monster” featuring Example, are as poppy as his song with Allen, but don’t let that fool you. The remainder of his album is very dark and introspective, whether recalling his former day job as a drug dealer, growing up in Hackney, or his relationships with exes and ex-labels.

Professor Green may have a lot going on, especially with his headlining European tour this fall, but in a recent interview he said the best thing about him was his new teeth. When asked what was wrong with his old teeth, he replied, “They looked like I tried to eat a TV.” Getting his teeth fixed is just one of the tasks from his to-do list on his old song “Before I Die,” where, in fact, you can see what trying to eat a TV looks like.

8 Oct

Kanye’s twitter storm this week gave everyone the answers they’ve been waiting for. We know that on November 22nd, Kanye West will drop the highly anticipated album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. What we didn’t know until know is how much more Justin Vernon(Bon Iver) contributes to this record.

According to Nah Right, Wednesday night at BAFTA in London, Kanye West screened his new film Runaway.  The rapper then gave a 2 hour Q&A, which reveals that Bon Iver will appear on 7 more tracks for the new record. Aside from that, Kanye also reveals that he plans to have La Roux, Mos Def, Santigold, and M.I.A on the record( gives full details on the q&a here).

Bon Iver’s first two contributions to the album, Monster and Lost In The World were released as apart of the G.O.O.D Friday series.

Click the link to Nah Right to read all about some of the stuff going on in Runaway. Nicki Minaj putting on a fake British accent to narrate the film is probably the best thing ever.

Dirtbag Debut : Crystal Castles – Baptism

8 Oct

Baptism(via P4K)

Crystal Castles have a fuck ton of awesome tracks on their new album. However, only certain ones can be singles and the track Baptism is one of them. In this new clip, Alice Glass is tripping out behind some crazy projections; while Ethan is playing drums with a creepy mask on.

We’d say this is typical Crystal Castles, but not only do you all know that; you absolutely love it. Don’t worry, so do we.

Dirtbag Debut : Uffie – Difficult

7 Oct

The princess of Ed Banger Records, Miss Uffie is back with her new single Difficult.

Directed by up and coming French crew, AB/CD/CD; the video is shot in the suburbs of Paris. Uffie seems wondering through many different hallways and not much else happens. It’s definitely not as hot as the ADD SUV video with Pharrell Williams, but you know. Good thing she thought this up first before Ke$ha had a chance to steal it.

Sex Dreams And Denim Jeans is out now via Ed Banger. Drowned In Sound just recently featured her on their site. Check it out here.
